Good morning, boys and girls, I’m glad to see you again. At the beginning of class, I have a Q: Do

you know the school life in other countries? Never mind, I’ll show you a video from Douyin. After

that, you will find the answer. We can see that their courses and activities are a bit different from

ours, right? Do you want to know more about the school life in other countries? Oh, I see all of

you are excited, now let’s learn a passage together. Please open your text book and turn to

What do you want to know about this text?（培养学生的自主能力，以学生为中心）Oh, you

want to know who is freshman? You want to know what is ‘challenge’.

Does anybody know the meaning of freshman? Oh a man feeling fresh? Ha, maybe, freshman

means ‘ a student in the first year of high school or college’, so all of you are freshman.

So whats the meaning of ‘challenge’? emm how did u feel about the first day in high school?

Excited? Nervous? Actually, Challenge means something new and difficult.

Now, do u have other questions? Oh！what happened with freshman? maybe he meets a lot of

challenges.

Ok, then let’s find out the answer together. Now read this passage in 3 minutes, then tell me the

main idea of each paragraph. OK? go! Oh, Lily is done! Can you tell me the main idea of para2？

OK, how about para3? and the last one? Guys, is that correct? Yes, all of you got the right answer,

congratulations! Lily, you got the answer so quickly, can you share your experience with us? （体

Emm, read the topic sentence and key words of each paragraph. So how to find the topic

sentence? Ah~read the first sentence or last sentence of each paragraph. Well done, thank you!

Maybe you have noticed this little note on page14, this is how to skim, it’s an important reading

skill.

So, after skimming, can u tell me: how many parts in this passage? 2 or 3? Or 4?! （表情）Yes, it

can be divided in two parts. Let’s draw a mind map about the structure of the text. Alex, can you

tell me which para is the main part? Yes, Para1.( 板书） So, who can tell me which are the

supporting parts? Ok, Mike. Para 2 and 3, （板书） emm. Is that all? Yes, para4 is also the

supporting part, it has the same structure with para2 and para3, you see these three paragraphs

are parallel! You got it? Thank you, I still appreciate your trying.（如果试讲时间只有 10 分钟左

右，这部分可不要） Ok, this is main part and the supporting part. Two parts. In para1, we know

that a freshmen is meeting a lot of challenges. And in Part2, it explains what kind of challenges

he is faced.

Now, it’s time for you to find out what kind of challenges Adam is faced with? And His feelings,

his solutions. This is activity 4 on page 15, Please read the passage carefully, and you’ll have 5

minutes, finished? In para1, Adam feels confused, right? Why? Lucy! Oh Because going from

junior school to high school is a big challenge. Yes! And this is the main part of text, so there is no

solution. In para2, what challenge did Adam face? Choosing the .. suitable courses! right! How he

feels? Yes, careful. The solution? The school adviser helped him, right? How? Yes, helped him

choose the suitable courses. Ok, para3. Marry, please. Yes, the challenge is that he tried to join in

the football team but he failed, and he felt unhappy at that time, but he will not give up, he find

OK, the boy behind Marry! The challenge is keeping up with the other students in his advanced

course, and get used to all the homework. He feels worries and happy. Oh, we could say he feels

worries but still happy, cuz they are opposite emotions, right? Ok, did Adam have other feelings?

Yes, confident! He feels confident about his future. Ok, what’s his solution? Well prepared for

university? Just this? Like, how to well prepared? Yes! He will try to study harder and get used to

being responsible for a lot more. great, thank you. (可根据试讲要求缩短答案，减少回答的学生

Ok, let’s read the title again. The freshman challenge. Now, we know all the challenges, let’s find

out more detail information. Please read the text again, then try to finish activity 3 on page 15,

you have 6 minutes. Go! OK! （手势）Can you tell me the answer of the question1? Yes, Adam

choose maths, English, chemistry, world history, and Chinese, and Advanced literature is his

favorite one, cuz he like English and he is good at it. Well done! Do you think this question is

difficult? Oh, it’s easy, because we can find the answer from the text directly. Then why is the

second question difficult? Yes, we have to infer the answer based on the facts from the text.

Excellent! Ok, the way to find the answer of Q3 is same with the first question of Q1, and Q4 is

same with the second question of Q1, it have to infer sth. I hope you can do it yourself, and

check the answer with your mates, ok? So what’s the answer of question2? Please. Yes, it means

to try out to join the football team. Great! How did u get the answer? Locate the phrase ‘make

the team’, and read the sentences around it carefully. You’re awesome! Thank you!

Post-reading

OK, we know so much about Adam. DO u have any questions? No? Ok. As a freshmen, we all

have challenges, What shall we do? Find a ..solution,right. Generally, we have different solutions,

why? Yes, we have different personality! Now, let’s do a group task. 4 people make up a group,

and you have 5 minutes to discuss what kind of person do you think Adam is? OK! Time’s up,

(you really have a heated discussion,) I cant wait to know your answer. Which group want to be

the first one? Wonderful, Cindy’s group, please. Oh, you think Adam is confident and

hard-working. Great! What about other groups? Yes（手势）em, Adam is optimistic. Thank you!
